The Debussy String Quartet needs no introduction, applauded the world over and always sharing their musical interpretations with the same passion. Always eager to experiment and engage in dialogue, our four chamber musicians invite pianist Nima Sarkechik.
From New York to Tokyo, Nima Sarkechik, renowned as a specialist in Johannes Brahms in the great concert halls, likes to take classical music to places where it is rarely heard. By regularly performing in retirement homes and young workers’ hostels, he and the musicians of the Lyon quartet are working to share music with as many people as possible. Together, for this exceptional concert, they offer us their versions of two major works from the repertoire of Romantic music from across the Rhine.
Robert Schumann’s quintet, the first Romantic opus for piano and string quartet, was premiered in 1843. Wagner was enthusiastic about it! A masterpiece of the genre, this model was later adopted by Brahms, who composed his future quintet first for solo strings and then for two pianos. But Brahms was dissatisfied. A conductor suggested he rework it for piano quintet. Contrary to his custom, Brahms followed the advice. Patience had its virtues, and in 1866 the work became world-famous.
